Bio

Dr. Amol Phadke is a Staff Scientist at the Electricity Markets and Policy Department at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He is an Affiliate and Senior Scientist at the Goldman School of Public Policy (GSPP), University of California, Berkeley, and one of the Founding Members of the India Energy and Climate Center at GSPP.

Amol manages a research program focused on power sector decarbonization, encompassing issues of storage, transmission, and new renewable options such as offshore wind, with a particular emphasis on techno-economic and policy analysis in the US, India, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia. His research also delves into hard-to-decarbonize sectors, concentrating on battery electric trains and ships, and the use of off-grid renewable energy-based hydrogen production for the decarbonization of several sectors. Additionally, Amol is particularly focused on identifying ways to leverage existing infrastructure in energy transitions. He has led several power and transport sector decarbonization studies, including assessments like The 2035 Report, which demonstrated how deep decarbonization of the power system can be achieved by 2035 while reducing consumer costs and maintaining reliability.

Amol regularly advises senior policymakers in the energy sector and has provided invited testimony to the U.S. Congress. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, including several in Nature Energy and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and over 100 other conference papers, magazine articles, and research reports. His work has been quoted in or by the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, LA Times, BBC, Fox News, Washington Post, The Hindu, The Times of India, The Economic Times, The Financial Express, and numerous other publications, and he has been featured on radio and broadcast news.

Prior to his employment at Berkeley Lab, Amol worked for TATA Motors and Prayas Energy Group. He holds a B.E. in Production Engineering from the College of Engineering, Pune, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Energy and Resources from the University of California, Berkeley.
